CMA

I’ve always contended that the best short story form is a song. In the brief, three minute time frame of a song, there is the set up, the plot, the character and usually a dramatic ending. I wrote my first song when I was seven years old.

Out on the range on a cold winters night, some riders were around.
They roped the steers and brought them in
At the meat counter they were found.

Maybe not the best short story in the world, but the elements were there. So I’m listening to the CMA’s last night and there are some really good stories. Great songs, great lyrics, great characters and great plots. But there is a young lady who is writing rings around these big stars. A lady named Molly Reed. I ran into her in Key West and I’ve mentioned her before on this blog. The songs that she has written are on My Space (some of them) and for my money she has captured the short story form better than most song writers. Maybe more than most short story writers. I’d give you dozens of reasons, but as it is with any story, you have to judge it for yourself. Check out My Space, Molly Reed. The songs are demos, and most are waiting for someone to stumble on them, record them and make them a hit.
One of her songs, Thelma and Louise, I used in 2010′s release, Don’t Sweat The Small Stuff. I used the lyrics and had the song playing on a jukebox. This girl is young…I’d guess early twenties, but she has the soul of a very mature woman and she writes with passion and a style that is very unique. I salute Molly Reed and her ability to tell a story!
Do yourself a favor and check her out. And if you have any connections to the recording industry, tell someone to get busy. This song writer could make some singer a star!!!

  1. I’ve always been fascinated with the “how” of writing a song. Where do you begin, Don? With the words? The music? Just an idea? Seems completely undoable to me, yet so many people do it, and some, so well. Will check out Molly Reed, thanks for the recommendation.

  2. I pick up a guitar, sit down at a piano, get a melody in my head while driving in the car. The story comes first or second, second or first. And talk about editing. It’s a three minute song. There’s no rhyme (well, there really is) or reason to how it happens. I do know that people like Molly who write full time, are more disciplined. They write with other people and stay a lot more focused than I do.
