Hemingway, Chaplin, F Scott Fitzgerald and Hadley.

Wednesday night I went to the Crosley Mansion in Sarasota and got to see Hemingway do The Old Man And The Sea. Fitzgerald read from The Great Gatsby and Hadley Hemingway ( one of the many Hemingway wives) read from his memoirs.
The actors were in costume, in character, and they had memorized the entire show. It was an unbelievable experience. Even Chaplin talked about his movie career. This Christmas season the mansion will feature Charles Dickens, and last year we saw Edgar Allen Poe.
Isn’t that cool…that there’s a place where they celebrate historic authors. In this time and place where electronic media is taking over, and we are fed our news and literature in sound bites, movies and video games, this organization takes us to our literary roots. It was a wonderful experience and I’m anxious to meet the author of Oliver Twist next December.

  1. This sounds very cool. And what a lovely setting it must be! Three cheers for an organization that puts on shows like that, and for all the people who attend, of course!

  2. Very cool. I’ve seen historical figures but never the likes of Ernest.

  3. I used to be an actor who played historical ( and often hysterical) characters. Never an author. Ben Franklin, Mozart, Howard Hughes and Sammy Cass.

  6. PS, as for Zorro…he’s been partying like a rock star. He was at last night’s induction at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. If I can wake him, I’ll get him to tell you all about it.

  8. Is Jeff Beck one of music’s greatest guitarist?
Hard pressed to convince many he isn’t after last nights Hall of Fame induction performance with Jimmy Page.
