Greetings from Foul Play Mystery Bookshop

After mucho flogging from Casey, and a nudge from Jeff, here’s Foul Play first attempt at blogging. Our sister in crime, Judy, who is also a partner in the store, was coerced in writing this piece.

There is nothing I like better than talking about/writing about mysteries, unless it is reading mysteries. Luckily, as a part-owner of Foul Play Mystery Bookshop, Westerville, Ohio, I get to read a lot of mysteries and even better, meet authors! Our store holds author signings when we can; in fact, we have a couple coming up. Luisa Buehler will be there on February 25th, for a Brown Bag lunch at 1:00 p.m., and talk about her new mystery, Puzzle, Plot and Punch! Then on April 21 at 12:30 p.m. Susan Witting Albert will host the 2nd Brown Bag lunch, and discuss her newest China Bayles novel–Wormwood. We are very sorry that the snow last week postponed a visit by Casey Daniels, and hope to have that rescheduled soon. We also have a strong bookclub that meets the second Wednesday of each month to discuss a mystery, snack on goodies, and just generally have a great time. This month we are reading O’Artful Death by Sarah Stewart Taylor. You can find out more about us at www.foulplaybooks.com There are three of us who own the store: John and Toni live there with the cats and the books, and I (Judy) commute down from Medina for authors and book club (weather permitting). I’m John’s sister, and therefore Toni’s sister-in-law, of course. I’m into cosy mysteries, police procedurals, British classics, and just about anything that is well written. John likes a variety, including ones too hard-boiled for me, and Toni likes everything from cosy to true crime. The cats just like treats. Thought I’d use this first blog to introduce us, and in future, we’ll take turns talking about books. (And maybe authors–we’ll be nice I promise.)

  1. Welcome to the madness, John, Toni & Judy! You’ll like it here at the Lil’ Blog. We’re (mostly) well-behaved.

  3. And I was so sorry I had to miss my visit to Foul Play. What a snow storm me had that day! It was just as well I never tried to go out on the road, not sure I would have made it back. And we had another snow just like it this last Wednesday. Absoloutely ridiculous here. How about the rest of the country? How are you faring, folks? We’ve got about 4 feet of the white stuff on the ground, and I’m sick of it!

  4. Glad to have you on board. You guys do a great job and I love to sign and sing at your store! Anyone who wants a very unique book experience needs to visit Foul Play.

  5. It seems like every day I read about another independent bookstore going under. It’s good to see you hanging in there. I’ll have to try to stop by Tuesday, as we’ll be in the area that day.

  6. It’s a nifty store, Steve. If it was summer, they’d serve you lemonaid on the porch out back.

  8. WELCOME to a bookstore “smart” enough to carry Deadly Pleasures Mystery Magazine . . . at least there were some there my last stop. Now, if you also carried math puzzle magazines . . . since math is such a mystery to much of the populace . . .

  9. Great to see you folks here! I was just telling someone about your store this week, when they asked if I’ve ever signed at a store that has a resident cat! : ) Hope to see you soon again.
