Whistle while you work

Everyone gets a tune in their head that they can’t get rid of. It happens to all of us. But why isn’t it a tune that we like. Or did we like it in the past and then, after it burned into our brain for a day, a week, a month, we grew to hate it. And why can’t we program what song we want into our brain.

Why can’t we just say…I like ‘You’ve Got A Friend’, and have that song play over and over again. And what if we COULD program the song that would play over and over in our head, and what if we grew to hate that song. Then we’d be programming songs that we would grow to hate.

And have you ever noticed that often times the songs that creep into our cranium are songs we don’t even know very well? Not a song that we sang in choir, or hummed in the car. Sometimes…often times, it’s a song that you don’t even know very well. And the worse thing about those songs is that we don’t know the words. So we’ve got a song going round and round in our skull, and most of the time we’re not even sure what the words are. Along with hating the song…having to live with it while it haunts us every minute of the day…we can’t even come up with the stupid lyrics.

And why am I sounding like Andy Rooney? I don’t know. Maybe it’s because I’ve got election commercials in my head that I can’t get rid of. And I can’t wait until today is over. Then we’ll all just have to live with the consequences. No matter who wins, here’s the real question. In a country that I truly believe has the brightest and the best people in the world, how do we settle for the idiots we nominate?

My father once said ( and he stole this) that anyone who truly wanted to run for President of the United States wasn’t qualified. He’s right. Who the hell would want the job. Oh, in case I could be arrested for saying this in the new administration…I was only kidding.

  1. Amen on all accounts.

I used to work for a mental health clinic in Wyoming, and every four years there was a real stress factor for a lot of people during the presidential campaigns.

  2. Now calm down Don…..Its almost over, its over….its OOOOOOOOOver.
The fat lady is about to sing!
The media has turned this election into a circus….sure wish there was an eathquake or hurricane or something else they could pontificat about.

    Or is it over?????

I have a feeling the political ads are going to give way to all the “BreakingNews” stories about election fraud…he cheated…she cheated…they cheated…and for the next eight weeks we’ll have to listen to every crooked lawyer (ooops, misspelled that=> lier) out their doing the American thing….suing everything that moves.
This truely is a nation of the best….but there’s a whole lot of room for improvement!

  3. I’m with you, Don. Glad it’s over. Now answer the truly burning question…what song is in your head and driving you crazy?

  4. Ususally on the early morning drive to the golf course is when various songs pop into my head. My golf game goes with the tempo. Too fast, and my swing speeds up and I’m in for a miserable round. Too slow and… well my distance suffers, but I’m in the fairway.

    Missed you at Magna, Don.

  7. Wilfred:

Very interesting observation. Does our daily life suffer or excell due to the song in our head? Mmmmmm. Is there a book in there? A short story, or a self help manual?

  8. Zman;
I ended up NOT going to Magna. Too many conferences, and I’m trying to do a stand-alone. I ended up in Chicago doing research in a 30 story 5500 sq. foot penthouse looking out over Lake Michigan, Grant Park, and the North side of Chicago. Navy Pier, Millineum Park, the NBC Tower, Wacker Drive, the Chicago River…they all look different from 30 stories up. Floor to ceiling windows on three sides…fabulous views. I could have stayed forever.
    I love research!

  9. Unfortunately the songs I usually have in my head are the ones my kids come home singing. Right now it’s, “Michael, Row your Boat Ashore.” I know. Could be worse. But it’s on about its twentieth repetition now…
