Love ‘em or Hate ‘em: the Deadline Blues

“A perfect method for adding drama to life is to wait until
    the deadline looms large.”

    Alyce P. Cornyn Selby

OK, I’ll admit it right up front: I have no idea who Alyce P. Cornyn Selby is (or was). But I do know she knows (or knew) what she was talking about. I have an October 15 deadline looming large and like with every deadline, the drama is mounting.

The house really needs a good cleaning.

There’s tons of laundry that needs to be washed.

Friends are suddenly asking about lunch/dinner/drinks. When can we schedule?

I’ve got a pile of German contracts to sign, and a trolley tour coming up this weekend, and an idea for a new series that would be brilliant if I just had time to sit down and think it through.

So how am I handling all this? Well, the first thing I decided to do is sit down and take a deep breath. And then I thought it would be interesting to see what the famous and not-so famous have to say about deadlines.

Just like Alyce, I don’t know who some of these people are, but here’s what they had to say:

“Deadlines are meant to be broken.”
    Sarah McLachlan

“I am one of those people who thrive on deadlines, nothing brings on inspiration more readily than desperation.”
    Harry Schearer

“This is the earliest I’ve ever been late.”
    Yogi Berra

“A deadline is negative inspiration. Still, it’s better than no inspiration at all.”
    Rita Mae Brown

“The ultimate inspiration is the deadline.”
    Nolan Bushnell

    “Success is 10% inspiration, 90% last-minute changes.”
    From a billboard ad

    And my very favorite . . .

“I love deadlines. I like the whooshing sound they make as they fly by.”
    Douglas Adams

Sounds like the next couple weeks will be dramatic and full of inspiration. I guess a writer can’t ask for more!

    1. Dead line. Is that like a goal line? Or a clothes line? Maybe similar to a dance line at those country western bars, or a bad line in a script. Hmmmm.
I do know that the shortest distance between two points is a straight line!

      Eeeeeeeeee!

    2. I’m in the same boat as you right now, Casey! One deadline which was Nov. 15 but have now been told is “as soon as you can get it in would be good,” and one on Jan. 1. A good problem to have!!

    3. Zorro, deadlines are like chorus lines. The closer they get, the more likely the writer is to get kicked in the butt!

And you’re right, Judy. It’s hard not to complain about deadlines. Without them, we wouldn’t be working writers.

    4. Dead Line? Dead Lines? - having one each and every Wednesday morning where 550 words are due come hell or high water is good practice. I get to see each week how close I can come without crossing it. It keeps my heart beating.

    5. Good the hear from you, Ed! Yeah, I imagine writing a column has its own special stresses, kind of like writing a blog! There are some Tuesdays I can’t think of a thing to say. And on some Wednesdays, I’m sure it shows!

    6. It’s so true. I am much more creative with a deadline due ( and a check).

    7. I worked for a weekly newsletter in Bangor, Main back in the 90’s and had a week to write four columns. I wrote every one the night before they were due, and some that morning. I understand deadlines, Casey.

    8. Casey;
As a newby who is yet unpublished, I wish I had a deadline. Someone needs to give me a swift kick and tell me to get it done. As of this moment, no one has offered.

    9. Zorro;
It’s like Verizon, that reliable piece of crap cellphone company. Every third call is a dead line!

by Orroz on September 24th, 2008 at 5:38 pm

    10. Brenda, trying setting your own. Or have a friend set a deadline for you and hold you accountable for it. It just might work!

    11. These are some of my favorite writing quotes:

“The difference between the right word and the almost-right word is the difference between the lightning and the lightning-bug.” - Mark Twain

“Being an author is like being in charge of your own personal insane asylum.” Graycie Harmon

“The coroner will find ink in my veins and blood on my typewriter keys.” C. Astrid Weber

“Writing is a socially acceptable form of schizophrenia.” E. L. Doctorow

    12. Hi Casey: Just got your entry for the Ohioana Book Festival today. Thanks so much! I was wondering if someone from Little Blog would mind getting in touch with me via e-mail regarding the festival, re: Rob Levandoski.

      Thanks,

      Leslie

    13. PS: that knife, the one that illustrates this blog . . . I swear we have that knife in the kitchen drawer at home!
