Labor Dayz

Labor Day, the traditional end of summer, is upon us. The holiday was originally inspired by labor unions in the 1880s for a day off after working all summer in the heat. I want to wish everyone a happy holiday.

August is also the typical lull in publishing. Not a lot of books come out in August and most of the editors and agents take some or part of the month off. So as it goes, I’ve had a month off from the Edgar competition. I’ve actually had time to read books for pleasure — although no one can believe that I’d read for pleasure with all these books coming my way. I finished 4 more Erle Stanley Gardner books in the meantime, which is no small feat with a typical stack of 45 books in my living room.

So now that Labor Day is upon us, I’m expecting a deluge of books for the contest. It’s exciting for me to get to read everything new that’s coming out. I see a number of market trends that I’ll comment on at the end of the year.

In the mean time, kick up your feet, pour yourself a cold one and pick up your favorite book to read. You’ve earned the rest.

  1. Labor Day….also marks the start of football for universities (Go Big Blue and ND Fighting Irish) and the final days of professional baseball.
Great time for sports fans in the USA.

  2. I’m going to go see the Tribe next week with my my friend Gary. He’s coming in from New York.

Speaking of Big blue, the only football team I follow is my high school team, the Brunswick Blue Devils.
They were pretty much a doormat team when I was in school (6,000 years ago) but they are now one of the better programs in the state. And they are already 1-0!

  5. I worked as an assistant editor for Berkley in New York, and I don’t ever remember having August off. Actually, it was a busy month, getting fall and winter books ready for launch.
Glad to have a three day holiday.

  6. We have company this weekend. Yeah!

That means we are playing lots of games, but not much reading.
