A Toast!
I was at my LYS on Saturday (for the un-fiber addicted, that’s Local Yarn Shop). There was a nice lady there named Elaine who was working on her first pair of socks and I was able to offer some advice and help her along. While we were chatting, she glanced over and saw the bag where I had my yarn and needles stored. It was one of the handouts from the Malice Domestic conference.
“Do you like mysteries?” Elaine asked.
I told her I did.
“Do you enjoy reading about women sleuths?”
Of course, I had to confess they were my favorites.
“Well,” she said, obviously eager to share her news, “on Monday, I’m going to the Parma library to hear Casey Daniels speak.”
Too funny, and of course I was left with a dilemma: reveal myself and have her think I was a knitter with delusions (however misplaced) of grandeur, or have her walk into the talk and wonder where she’d met me before.
I told her who I was and yes, Elaine still came to my talk at the Parma South branch of the Cuyahoga County Library last Monday evening.
What a great event it was. We had a nearly packed room of enthusiastic readers with some writers thrown in, too. I can always tell who they are, of course, because their questions are just a little different from the questions readers ask. We had a good discussion about books and publishing, ghosts and paranormal research.
Each time I visit a library, I’m awed by the energy, drive and organizational skills of the librarians I meet. For the most part, they are women, and on the whole, they have the kind of enthusiasm and get-things-done attitude that tells me they could rule the world.
Hmmm…a world ruled by librarians. I think I like the sound of that.
In the meantime, here’s to all those librarians out there. You do important and valuable work. We writers thank you.
