    Songwriters

I write songs. I wrote songs long before I wrote books or short stories. Long before I told stories ( without the music.) The first song I ever wrote was at the age of five. The melody is a soft country swing. The lyrics are as follows.
Out on the range on a cold winter’s night
    Some writers were around
They roped the steers and brought them in
At the meat counter they were found.

    I was five, people.
So we were in Key West two weeks ago and the Hog’s Breath 13th annual Key West Songwriters’ Festival was going on. Over one hundred songwriters from Nashville decended on the tiny island, and BMI and ASCAP…the two powerhouse publishing houses in the country, paid for the writers to come down, network, hang out and sing their songs.

The songwriters were all guitar players, almost all very young, and all had great voices. Most of them could have been stars themselves. Writers like the lovely Leah Crutchfield, who signed a publishing contract at the tender age of 17. ( How do you have enough life experience to write stories/songs at that age?) She wrote a song last year for Taylor Hicks’ album ( American Idol) that sold over a million copies.

Scotty Emerick writes with Toby Kieth and is responsible for ‘Beer For My Horses’, and ‘I Love This Bar’ among other great tunes.

The very young, very sexy Molly Reed was there, who has just written a song called ‘Louise’. She and a co-writer sang it poolside at out bed and breakfast. You can check it out on My Space.

John Oats ( of Hall and Oats), Jerod Nieman (Good Ride Cowboy for Garth Brooks), Wil Nance (She’s Everything for Brad Paisly), David Lee ( I Need You for Faith Hill), Robert Earl Keen ( The Road Goes On Forever And The Party Never Ends).

Josh Kear was there. He wrote ‘Before He Cheats’, the extremely popular Carrie Underwood song. And the list goes on forever…and the party never ended. From early morning and the sound of guitar music drifting throught the open windows to 4 a.m. when some of the weary musicians/singers/songwriters would straggle back to their hotels and houses…it was a truly memorable week. Jamming, sharing musical ideas, over one hundred of the finest writers I’ve ever met…and heard, got a chance to show off. And a good time was had by all.

    1. Sounds like a lovely time, Don. Glad you could be there for it.

And if any of you haven’t heard his album, Last Flight Out, you really should!

    2. I am in total awe of songwriters — especially pickers or plunkers like yourself who can match words and music and create a total little story.

So, where do you start when you write a song? Words first? Music first? Do they come at the same time?

    3. Don, you do the most interesting things! Sounds like a fascinating and inspiring week.

    4. Sorry to miss dinner with you and Linda. Hope all went well at the signing.
Did see an unassisted triple play. That was cool! I was there for
      H-I-S-T-O-R-Y.
But triple plays, unassisted don’t hold much water compared to your week of music.

I think it’s just like a book. Sometimes a hook line just rings into your head. Sometimes it’s the story and sometimes it’s a girl. Every song is different. One of the writers told about a session he had where he’d been drunk on Jager Meister the night before and while driving to a recording session had a hook come into his head.

There are five dirty blonds doing Jager bombs in the kitchen where you burned my toast.

He and another writer fleshed it out in less than an hour. The story is how the guy put a stripper pole in the living room, dirty blonds in the kitchen etc. after his wife left him.

Apparently Faith Hill and Tim McGraw are doing the song in concert and are going to record it.
We should all get so drunk! That’s probably $200,000 for the writer!

    6. Casey and Z;
Very sorry you didn’t come to dinner. We had your reservations. Met two of my former classmates ( and Linda’s) and we had a mini class reunion. Nice crowd for the signing
Richard says hi to all, and we all wondered where Bob was.

    7. I guess we could get drunk and try, Don, but I don’t think I want another stripper pole in my living room.

By Richard, I’m guessing you mean the famous Mr. Gildenmeister. When my first book was published I went to him for tips on how to promote it. He showed me his apartment at Shaker Square. He has hundreds of signed first editions dating way back. One of my favorite people of all time.

    8. Hi Don….we wanted to come and chill for a bit but just could not manage it together. So I took in the Indians old fashioned double header….sort of…things just keep getting in the way of plannned events.
Take Sunday for example. Over all a great day. Would have been even better if my tire had not gone flat while we did our muffins for mom at the MetroParks….if my daughter’s boy friend’s plumming had not “exploded” as my daughter stated….if that 45ft tree had not come down in our back yard, just missing the house!
Never a dull moment in this part of tow.

    9. Actually…the lyrics to my first song are…

Out on the range on a cold winters night
      Some RIDERS were around.

The lyric is Riders…not writers. I’m had too many Jager Bombs!

    10. Jager…..ugh!
