    All the Little Gadgets

I’ve been dealing with a lot of technology lately. Kind of strange for me, but then, that’s the way things are now, isn’t it? At one point this week I realized that in my purse I was carrying an iPod, a dictaphone, and TWO cell phones.

Why two cell phones? Well…with my hubby’s job, traveling all over with soccer teams, he has to have a cell phone or be out of touch for a majority of the time — especially those three hectic months in the fall season. Because of that, we had his phone, our land line, and my Tracfone (one of those pre-paid deals). The Tracfone worked great for the little I travel, but it turns out that it’s actually cheaper for us to get another cell phone on a family plan, and drop the land line altogether. So I’ve been carrying around both cell phones this week, hoping to transfer my contacts over to the new phone whenever I get a chance.

On another technological side, I have been working on updating my web site. My web designer, after four years, has decided that her life (which is not spent as a full-time designer) is just too hectic to take care of my site anymore, so I had to find a new person. Between the new guy and my site host (who is a very generous cousin-in-law) I think we’ll finally get new information up soon. Not something I know anything about. The new guy and my cousin have cc’ed me on their e-mails, and with all this talk of zipping up sites, curling things, and who knows what all, I’ve decided I’m quite stupid on the subject. Thank God for people who know what they’re doing.

I also have a new e-mail address since — believe it or not — I’d been on dial-up until two weeks ago. We still don’t have actual High Speed Internet, since it’s inaccessible out here in the boonies, but I did manage to get wireless from Verizon, which is about three or four times faster than what I did have. So it’s better. Not spectacular, but better.

A funny note — with all the technology flying around here these days, I am still recording TV shows on a portable VCR. No TiVo for us, and no digital access yet. I do have those coupons just lying on my desk, but will have to force myself one of these days to actually go out and use them.

So it’s just been high/low tech here in the Clemens household. Not my expertise, but there’s no getting around it these days.

Anybody else have tech stories to tell?

    1. I try to avoid all the new high-tech stuff. I figured once the TV remote was invented, what else was needed?

But little by little we’re teching up. I’ve got a cellphone now, we’ve got high-speed wireless, a glass cooktop, a mircowave and a toaster oven.

But the coolest we’ve got is a caller ID system that shows us who’s calling on the TV screen. Now, if only I could get a toaster oven that brings my snacks directly to the sofa. I would never have to get up.

    2. I’m with you, Judy. I’m not good at technology and I simply don’t care that much about it. Yet it’s swamping all our lives. Whether we like it or not. So far, I’m holding my own, but that tide is rising! One of these days, I might actually learn how to reply to my daughter’s text messages!

    3. Wow, techy stuff must be in a phase of the moon today.
I just finished an hour long session with my son about the “Zune” machine. The Zune is Microsoft’s version of Apple’s Ipod, and it is cool! We needed to update software and stuff and the new software update makes the Zune even cooler than it already was.
I now carry around in my shirt pocket 1671 songs….some of these songs are complete symphonies because I’m a big fan of classical music. Last look at the hours of music I carry…..somewhere around 150 hours! Wow!
When the Witch…..oppps, Casey picked this device up for me as a gift, the kids all said I would never use it. They were wrong…its neat.

    5. No, CR, don’t do it! Spend your time on something else today! Resist the temptation!!!

    6. Okay, here’s a frightening thought. I sat down a couple of months ago and figured out how much we spent in a month on “services” that weren’t even available when we got married 33 years ago. I was appalled. Obviously we lived just fine back then with out satallite TV (with DVR feature-my favorite techie thing in the world), cell phones, the complete computer things, multiple phone services etc. Of coasre it’s unrealistic to think we could abandon the computer, but the rest of the stuff? Just a drain on the St.Clair economy.

    7. C.R. wants a toaster that brings his snacks? Well, it’s kind of low tech, but I built this slide from the front door to my easy chair and now the Pizza guy just gives the pizza box a little tap and it lands at my feet. I’ve got an extendable metal arm with a grip that opens the refrigerator and I can grab a beer without ever leaving my heated reclining chair…and we have 300 some channels plus music on the TV that I can access with my remote. The phone is right here as well, and I can see who is calling on the screen too. Like now. Like C.R. is calling.
“I’m sorry. No one is home. I’m out to lunch.”

    8. I think CR is “out to lunch”!

See what high tech can get you? A free lunch via email/blogging!
