    Well, I Never!

I have to tell you, after reading my fellow bloggers’ posts each week, I tend to feel a tad inadequate. Priceless meteorites, stints in jail for Girl Scout cookie scamming, children writing books . . . it’s enough to make anyone think life is passing by without nearly enough excitement.

But instead of trying to compete (I mean, why bother, right?), I decided to spend today’s blog thinking about all the things I haven’t done.

Here’s what I’ve come up with:

I’ve never watched American Idol, Dancing with the Stars, Oprah or Doctor Phil.

I’ve never read a book by Norah Roberts.

I’ve never been surfing, or for that matter, deep sea fishing, sky- or scuba diving.

I’ve never visited the Grand Canyon (though that is on my “before I die” list).

    I’ve never driven a motorcycle.

I’ve never baked a cake that was more than just edible.

I’ve never built furniture except for the kind that comes in pieces and needs screws to hold it together.

I’ve never bought a copy of People magazine and when I see it and other mags like it at the check out counter of the grocery store, I never know who the people on the cover are.

I’ve never been a soccer mom.

In keeping with that, I’ve never owned a mini-van, though I do have a tiny station wagon my children call “the grocery getter.”

I’ve never been to Asia, Africa, South America, Greenland or Australia. I would like to see New Zealand. And Iceland.

    I’ve never owned a snake.

    I’ve never met a mystery writer I didn’t like.

I’ve never been to the top of the Statue or Liberty, but I have been to Ellis Island. If you’re in New York, make time to take the tour. It’s incredible.

I’ve never learned a foreign language well.

I’ve never bungee jumped or moto-crossed (is that the proper term?)

I’ll bet I could go on adding to the list. The trick, I suppose, is looking at it and deciding which of these things I’d really like to do someday.

I’m pretty sure we can cross off skydiving and bungee jumping. Oh, and American Idol, too.

    1. I’ve never played Texas Hold ‘em. Or Yahtzee for that matter. Am I missing something?

by Don on April 9th, 2008 at 5:36 am

    2. I’ve never published 38 books.

      by C.R. on April 9th, 2008 at 6:21 am

    3. Okay, I’m back from walking the dogs. Now I can seriously analyze your blog to see if you’ve really missed out on anything. Yes, there are a lot of exciting things you haven’t done, but you have been married to Zorro for the last 50 years or so. I would think that more than makes up for those other things. Especially never owning a snake.

      by C.R. on April 9th, 2008 at 7:19 am

    4. You’re right, of course, about Zorro. He adds enough excitement to my life! But that doesn’t mean I don’t want to see the Grand Canyon. And Iceland.

by Casey on April 9th, 2008 at 7:21 am

    5. And besides, it only feels like 50 years.

by Casey on April 9th, 2008 at 7:22 am

    6. I was trying to see how we matched up. Not very well.

I’ve never been a soccer mom, but I am a soccer dad and coach.

I’ve never been to Greenland or Africa.

I’ve never OWNED a snake, but I did catch one and keep it for a couple of weeks, until my Mom found out.

I HAVE met a mystery writer that I don’t like, but I won’t go there.

I have NOT been to Ellis Island or to the top of the Statue of Liberty.

    7. Have you been to all those other places, Wilfred? I like to BE places, I just don’t like to GET to places. Which means that trip to Iceland would be long, long, long. Still, I hear it’s beautiful there.

by Casey on April 9th, 2008 at 8:22 am

    8. I go to China quite a bit - Asia.

I have some awesome pictures of the Ice Festival in Harbin, China from my last visit. It’s almost a city made of ice and lit up from the inside.

Been to London - I guess that qualifies as Europe.

Stopped in Sydney for a night on a longer trip.

Flown 38,000 feet over the north pole on the way from Chicago to Beijing. Got some spectacular photos.

Been to Mexico and South America both on business and pleasure.

And I’ve been to every state except Vermont.

Most of these are for business. So not a lot of siteseeing involved.

    9. My goodness, Wilfred, those photos are amazing! What an incredible thing.

by Casey on April 9th, 2008 at 10:30 am

    10. Casey,

If you thinks those photos are something, have Don show you his photos from the 8th Annual Lima, Ohio International Famous Popcicle-Stick Buildings Festival. His 8,000-stick replica of Millard Fillmore’s birthpace is especially breathtaking.

      by C.R. on April 9th, 2008 at 10:43 am

    11. Yeah, but they didn’t have to build them in -20 degree weather.

by Wilfred Bereswill on April 9th, 2008 at 10:50 am

    12. Hey, there was something on the news last night about a ship built entirely of Popsicle sticks. There were people actually sailing on the boat. I didn’t stick around to see the entire news clip. Go figure.

by Casey on April 9th, 2008 at 10:53 am

    13. Oh, if you want to talk about things you’ve never eaten, take a look at these dishes.

      http://wbereswill.com/wordpress/?p=25

It’s amazing that fried scorpians tastes a bit like potato chips.

by Wilfred Bereswill on April 9th, 2008 at 10:53 am

    14. Wilfred,

Have you ever been to Lima, Ohio?

It’s twenty below even in summer. that’s why Don spends every possible minute in Florida.

By the way, send me a bottle of Whistle.

      by C.R. on April 9th, 2008 at 10:54 am

    15. Would you settle for a bottle of Bud?

by Wilfred Bereswill on April 9th, 2008 at 11:00 am

    16. Gotta be Orange Whistle.

I once did a story at Vess Beverages out in Marysville. It was about 110 ten outside and much hotter inside the plant.

Years ago my family operated a little grocery story and I fondly remember all those old soda pop brands. My favorite, Grapette.

      by C.R. on April 9th, 2008 at 11:07 am

    17. I know what you’re talking about, C.R., but I haven’t seen a Whistle in a While.

Not sure you’ve heard of Sundrop. A citrus soda bottled near my old college, Rolla. I occasionally see those still on the shelf.

by Wilfred Bereswill on April 9th, 2008 at 11:21 am

    18. Sundrop? Sure.

Here in Akron we used to have a brand called Norka (Akron spelled backwards.

And have you ever had a Moxie? It was one of the first and worse sodas ever. Tastes like boiled celery.

      by C.R. on April 9th, 2008 at 11:58 am

    19. Who would boil celery and then drink the liquid????…..besides CR.

      Zz

by Zorro on April 9th, 2008 at 12:45 pm

    20. Zman, what do you think they put in Viagra?

(But in order to get the same effect, you have to drink about three gallons of it.)

      by C.R. on April 9th, 2008 at 2:52 pm

    21. What a list, Casey. I’ve never done most of those things, either. But I have to admit I HAVE watched American Idol…

by Judy on April 9th, 2008 at 7:35 pm

    22. I get extremely upset when C.R. starts distorting the facts. Lima actually has summer temperatures. It’s been above freezing even the last twenty minutes, and it’s only April. And Mallard Fillmore? Is that a type of duck? I built a copy of Abe Lincoln’s log cabin outhouse. Life size. Working model.
