Just got back from Sleuthfest in Deerfield Beach, Florida and I’m heading out to Left Coast Crime in Denver this weekend. They’re all great mystery conferences and great parties. But I wanted to invite all of you to the party for St. Barts Breakdown, March 11th, in Lima, Ohio at the Main Street Bistro from 6 to 8 in the wine cellar. It’s a very cool restaurant with free wine and food…and a great book!
You can visit, buy the book, and have a Caribbean trip whenever you want it…all during this miserable winter. You are all invited, and all you have to do is show up.
Three of the characters in the book are real people who paid quite a sum of money to the Rotary Foundation in Lima to be included in the novel. So, we’re donating $10 from every book to the Rotary Foundation for the good works that they do. See? You’re not only getting free wine, free food, good company and a warm read, but you’re donating to a worthy charity.
So…Let’s Have A Party! Bring your friends and we’ll have a great time.

Too bad it’s a school night or I might risk the buffalo herds, wildcats and prairie dogs.
But thanks for the invite.
And do tell us more about this real people thing. That sounds interesting.

I auctioned off four characters for the Rotary Foundation and Columbus Literacy Council. Raised $2000. The one lady who plays Danny Murtz’s secretary is one of the sweetest ladies I know, and I’ve been friends with her for probably 35 years. When I asked her what she wanted to be, she said “Bad!”
So…she’s bad! It was fun living with their personalities for six months, and even more fun to see the reviews on the book that mention the characters.

Sounds like great fun, Don. Just curious…what kind of legal angles are involved in using real people as characters? Are there any?

Don:
Any plans to come to Cincinnati soon? How about the Mad Anthony Conference in Hamilton in April?

Casey;
I’ve done this before, and there are quite a few authors who use real people. Lee Child auctioned off characters at Sleuthfest. I show them the completed manuscript and ask them if it’s okay. Obviously I don’t embarass them, and they always give me their blessing. This is really a great way to raise money for a charity.

Krista;
I fly into Dayton next Monday and my car is at the Cincinnati Airport. (very complicated story). Why don’t you just pick me up in Dayton…then drive me to the Cincinnati airport?
If that doesn’t work, I’ll look into the Mad Anthony Conference. Never heard of it before.
I look forward to seeing some of you in Denver this weekend!
