Once every 4 years
Today is Leap Year Day, February 29th. Unlike most holidays, this one only happens every four years, the day that they added to the calendar to make things even out. The world had operated under the Julian calendar for centuries, only to find it was too long. The US adopted the new calendar in 1752 and pushed the date up 11 days to make up for the lost time — talk about a lost weekend. In Alaska, this wasn’t done until 1867 in a year where they skipped my birthday.
So now our year is based on the Gregorian calendar (all named after popes) and is 365.2425 days long.
For us this year, another day of February means more chances of snow, and another day of political advertising before our primary on Tuesday.
I know a couple of Leap Year babies, who despite being my age are only 12 years old. Sigh. I was recently quoted in the newspaper, and they listed my age - what a breach of privacy that was!!
Anyway, enjoy the extra day. Do something that you’d only want to do every 4 years, like clean the oven or have dinner with the in-laws.
