One of These Things is Not Like the Others

My thanks to Teresa and the other fine folks at the Barnes & Noble store in Pickerington, Ohio for a great author event last Saturday. I was one of eight authors at the signing and we met and talked to and signed books for dozens of readers.

It was a lot of fun, but truth be told, I was something of a fish out of water.

You see, the other authors–TL Gray, Isabelle Drake, Saralee Etter, JC Wilder, Madeline Oh, Marcia James, Paige Cuccaro–write for a publisher called Ellora’s Cave.

Never heard of them? Well, if you’re not familiar with the new wave of erotica in the romance industry, you probably haven’t. Since I published my first books in romance, I’m familiar with the publisher, though I have to say, their books are not (in my traditional definition of the genre, anyway), anything like what I would call romance. Ellora’s Cave is new and has been wildly successful. They are located in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, just a stone’s throw from Akron.

What does Ellora’s Cave publish? Here’s how their website describes the levels of sensuality in their books:

S-ensuous–love scenes are explicit and leave nothing to the imagination

E-rotic–love scenes are explicit, leave nothing to the imagination.and are high in volume per the overall word count.

X-treme–differ from E-rated titles only in plot premise and storyline execution. Stories designated with the letter X tend to contain difficult or controversial subject matter not for the faint of heart

Like I said, not the kind of romance I used to write!

There was an upside to the whole experience. In fact, there was more than one. All the authors were great, so were the Ellora’s Cave staffers who showed up, and I had one especially interesting reader encounter:

Reader: I just got divorced after 29 years of marriage. I’m not in the mood for romance.

Me: Well, I kill people in my Pepper Martin mysteries.

    Reader: Sold!

PS–This same B&N store is having a mystery event in the fall and I’ve been invited. Want to take the blog show on the road, fellow bloggers? If we’re all interested, I’ll let Teresa know.

    1. Casey, you separated a letter from the three words describing the writing style. S-E-X. So are these books about sex?

    2. No. 1, Count me in for the fall.

No. 2, I know the Pepper Martin on the cover of your books is really you, but how about the erotica ladies? Were they a spitting image of their characters, too?

    3. I’ll be there for the mystery group…but would have liked to visit the porn group as well. You know, purely as an observer. You’re never too old to pick up a pointer or two.

    4. Don, I don’t think it’s a pointer you want to pick up.

Also, erotica is not porn! It’s — well, it’s porn with adjectives.

    5. Don, how perseptive of you to notice that I am used as the model on the Pepper Martin covers! I need to point that out to most people.

As for the EC books, seems to me from what I saw, that most of the covers featured the men. So did the calendar the editor handed out to her authors. Actually, I’m glad I didn’t get one, the guys featured each month were absolutely creepy!

    6. Hey! I can do absolutely creepy! Are they doing a calendar next year?

      by C.R. on February 27th, 2008 at 9:33 am

    7. Maybe we need to do a Little Blog of Murder calendar. Hmmm…

    8. Casey, casey, casey,

I just looked at that erotica publisher’s website. How did you ever get invited to do a signing with those guys?

      by C.R. on February 27th, 2008 at 11:50 am

    9. Actually, CR, I think I was invited thanks to a recommendation from a childrens author I met at Buckeye. She writes books about pirates. I think some of the EC ladies probably write about pirates. I’ve never written about pirates.

    10. That same line of “I kill people, no romance involved” works for those of us married to the military to. I’ll take death over sex right now (okay, I usually read death over sex, but that’s neither here nor there :-D)

by Marissa on February 27th, 2008 at 2:30 pm

    11. When I was a kid I wanted to be a pirate. But then I found out I had seasick issues. Not to mention my fear of parrots.

    12. Ahoy matey….Chips Ahoy.

by Zorro on February 27th, 2008 at 3:33 pm

    13. Chip Sahoy?

Zorro, is that your stage name for the Chips-and-ale dance troupe you belong to?

      by C.R. on February 27th, 2008 at 4:14 pm

    14. Yep…..
We go on right after the EC book people. Life is great.
