    A Week in the Life

Lots happening at the Daniels homestead this week, not the least of which is that we have no hot water. NO hot water!

The thermo-whatz-itz went on the tank. On Saturday, of course. Luckily, there is a handy 800 number right on the water tank. When you call it, you get some folks in India who have no understanding of hot water tanks, not to mention the English language.

Long story short, the part is supposed to arrive today. And with any luck, Zorro will be able to install it (he’s handy that way). But truth is, I am not cut out for the pioneering life. We’ve been heating water on the stove to bathe, heating water on the stove to wash dishes. It’s inconvenient and aggravating and it proves once and for all (as if there was ever any question) that had I lived back in the way back when, I would have been one of those un-hardly souls who stayed East and did not venture into the wilderness. I like my creature comforts. I’m crabby without them.

In other news, I did a nice signing at the Cleveland Home & Garden Show on Saturday. Got there early and walked and walked (and walked). The IX Center is huge and the place was packed. Though we were awestruck at all the folks demonstrating how to clean floors with magical mops and amazed at the guy with the Veg-o-Matic type thingy that cut waffle fries, we were strong. We bought nothing at all. And a whole bunch of nice people bought my books. So all in all, it was a successful day. My thanks to Chris and all the other nice people over at Gray & Co. (a Cleveland publisher) who did all the work setting up the booth and the signings.)

In the meantime, the snow is flying, it’s way colder than I like it to be, and have I mentioned, I have no hot water?

Hopefully, there are better days ahead.

    1. Cold water has numbed her brain, because the tank officially went south on Friday.
I’ll fix it or my name ain’t Zorro!
And if I can’t fix it….look out Lowes, Whirlepool and who ever else is named in that class action law suit they already lost…..but hey, per Whirlpool, they didn’t do anything wrong. Right……tell that to the thousands without hot water

    2. So, hot water-wise you guys are bupkis?

      by C.R. on February 13th, 2008 at 7:21 am

    3. This must be an epidemic! We have no water AT ALL right now, because our system is full of chlorine to disinfect the well after the latest flood. And even if we did have water we wouldn’t have hot water because our water heater also went on the fritz (5th one in 4 years because of our sulfuric water). Steve got a new one to put in, but lo and behold he opened the box and it’s damaged and won’t work. Wouldn’t you know!

So good luck with yours. I’m sure Zorro is the man for the job.

Glad you had a good signing. Sounds fun!

    4. Water? I don’t need no stinkin’ water.
I got Scotch, (potatoe)vodka, beer and whiskey.

by Don on February 13th, 2008 at 8:34 am

    5. It’s called a thermocoupler — how do I know this? Because we lost ours a few years ago; fortunately, my dad who is the packrat of all packrats had 2 in his basement. Otherwise, it would be brrrrrrrr for sure.

    6. Judy…it is an epidemic.
I just got finished repairing my sisters tank. It was only 6 yrs old.
And not to long ago I put in a new tank for my brother.
Good thing we have some Scotch, (potatoe)vodka, beer and whiskey. It keep you warm….and after a while, I don’t need no stinkin’ water neither!
      Z
PS: good luck with that hot water tank nightmare of yours. Are those tanks warrented we they fail? Hope they’re not Whirlpool tanks.

    7. Judy, your situation is way worse than ours! No water? Yikes! A couple years ago when this part of the country had “the big black out,” we were without electricity and water for something like 36 hours. The electricity was no big deal. The water is a very big deal, indeed!

As far as all these mechanical things failing . . . Mercury is in retrograde. Ask your local astrologist. It means things are going to go wrong, and it’s living up to its reputation.

by Casey on February 13th, 2008 at 10:09 am

    8. Yee Cats! Jeff’s right, it’s a thermocouple. It’s a 10 dollar part with a life expectancy of about 5 years - although they usually last longer. Any qualified plumber or HVAC tech in the greater Cleveland area would have a case of them in his truck. Fifty bucks and a half-hour later you’re back in the laundry business. So, I guess the lesson from this is NEVER call the 800 number on the water heater.

You’re not having fun unless the tank ruptures all over your basement. Yeah, that smells good.

Judy, don’t go to a laundromat. Just give me a yell and do your laundry here. Delphos water is much better than it used to be, and we give you service with a smile.

    9. I feel your pain ladies. The other night I made a last trip to the bathroom before going to bed and walked into water up to the top of my toes! Apparently when I’d brushed my teeth earlier, I’d left the water running! And it was pouring over the sink like Niagrara Falls!

I know know which was worse: the wet feet or the realization that I was sinking into senility.

      by C.R. on February 13th, 2008 at 10:57 am

    10. Don, by the way, you misspelled potato.

      by C.R. on February 13th, 2008 at 10:58 am

    11. Yikes! We’re all having water problems . . . Twilight Zone music here . . . this is too weird!

by Casey on February 13th, 2008 at 11:10 am

    12. Yes, the thermocouple is the culprit, however,it was just doing its job. The thermocouple does its job when the tank heats up to a tempeture higher than allowed….a fuse like mechanism melts and shuts the thing down.
But…..this Whirlpool tank is amoung the thousands that have failing thermocouples because of a faulty design of other parts of the tank….thus, the class action law suit..which they have already lost (Whirlpool that is).
I knew I could pick one of those items (thermocouples) up and get us up and going…..however, safety was my concern on this tank/recall/law suit matter.
So I went the way of the 800 number….through India and all the hoops the lawyers have set up to make life unbearable for everyone but the bad guy and finaly got the part ordered and shipped. It due to be delivered today.
      Hmmmmmm.
Judy’s water tank/water issue is way worse….maybe she needs an Indian attorney to bring things back under control.
By ther way, do all toll free numbers terminate in India these days?

by Zorro on February 13th, 2008 at 11:37 am

    13. Yes, the water heater is under warranty. Otherwise, we’d be in deep…water.

Yes, it’s a good thing Don isn’t running as vice president. You say potato, Dan Quayle says potatoe.

by Judy on February 13th, 2008 at 3:54 pm

    14. Don….Dan….Hmmmm maybe Don is Dan!

Water heater update: repair complete. Tank is now heating water…by the way, water coming into the house at this point of the year ==> 44F

by Zorro on February 13th, 2008 at 4:06 pm

    15. Is it any wonder I’m crazy about Zorro? He got it done! Can’t wait until that water heats up. What a luxury!!

by Casey on February 13th, 2008 at 4:29 pm

    16. I can’t believe you people went back and forth all day long on a water heater.

I write an enlightening blog on goat droppings and I get four comments. But a broken thermocoupler and everybodys’s got sooooooooooooo much to say.

      by C.R. on February 13th, 2008 at 4:36 pm

    17. this is Russian Vodka. Maybe they spell Potatoe with a toe in Russia.

by Don on February 13th, 2008 at 4:38 pm

    18. Obviously, water heaters are a hot topic. Chuckle, chuckle. I’m allowed to chuckle. In spite of being up late last night (we went to see “Wicked”) I managed to write 7 decent pages today. And I have hot water. Life is good!

by Casey on February 13th, 2008 at 5:30 pm

    19. Having hot water is better than being in hot water. which is where I spend most of my life.

      by C.R. on February 13th, 2008 at 6:33 pm

    20. No hot water? NO hot water???!!! I would have used that as an excuse to get thee to the nearest Holiday Inn for a short vacation. Yikes. I’m shivering just thinking about it!
