Well, in a weak moment, we decided to get another dog. We’ve been so lonely after our poor little Ellery passed away 3 weeks ago. The house was just too quiet. No one was sniffing my feet while I tried to read, and I ate all of my sandwiches, which meant I had gained weight. All good reasons to get a puppy.

So we’re now housebreaking a new puppy. His name is Scooter, he’s a West Highland terrier, and he’s 8 weeks old. So far we’ve managed some potty training and he’s almost there. He’s in the biting stage, so we have scratches up and down our arms. We were able to pick him up at a local breeder, who lives in Appalachia near where my family is from.
I couldn’t think of any unique mystery names for this dog. I think I’d used my only good mystery name with Ellery. I’d wanted something unique and yet recognizable in its source. So Ellery fit the bill. I can’t think of any for another dog. If anyone has any ideas, please let me know. We’re planning on more dogs when we get a house.

Welcome, Scooter! Jeff, my first dog was a Westie and he was the nicest, sweetest, most well behaved beast on the planet. We used to say he was a little gentleman in a dog suit. You’ll love this little creature and he’ll love you back!

Awww, don’t think of it as a ‘weak moment’ and ’succumbing’ - it’s marvelous that you’ve opened your heart and home to a new friend. As for a name, he looks like an ‘Archie’ Goodwin to me (not implying that you’re Nero Wolfe, of course, it’s just how he’s little face struck my imagination).

Jeff, I hope you don’t mind…I messed with Scooter’s picture to make it smaller. It was sending the size of the whole blog out of whack!
Hope he’s doing well. Bet you’re keeping busy with him.

Congrats, Jeff on the new addition! I know the feeling. When we lost our previous dog to kidney failure, I couldn’t think of another one. But… yes, the house was so quiet, so empty… We went and picked out another dog three days later. Never regretted it. Getting a new one helps to fill that empty space. Have fun with your new pal!
