New work
As of this month, I’ve taken on a new freelance job (like I needed one more!)
I’m now the marketing columnist for The Third Degree, Mystery Writers’ of America’s newsletter. It’s ironic in a way that Anthony Boucher wrote for this self-same newsletter some 50 years ago, and I love the continuity that lies between us. From the master to the man who writes about him.
I’ll be taking questions about marketing and PR, and how to promote your book. I’ve always been a fan of tasteful promotions. You’d be surprised that as a marketing person how often I get put on mailing lists that I didn’t request or get insulting emails from angry members of MurderMustAdvertise. It is true that you get more fans with honey than vinegar. All those rules you learned in Kindergarten and such.
Anyway, it ties in nicely to my other work, and I’m always amazed at how fast things change. I’ve just finished the 3rd edition of Intent to Sell, and merrily sent it away to the publisher. I’ve added 5000 new words on all the things that now go on in marketing and a whole new chapter. I had to edit all the contact information, and sadly I dropped the Atlanta Journal-Constitution and its wonderful former book editor from my list of review organs.
So if you have any new ideas or questions regarding marketing, let me know, and I’ll write about them in an upcoming column for TTD.
