    Great Gifts for Writers

I know we’re past Christmas, but it’s just far enough that I’ve come to really appreciate two gifts I received from my parents. As writers, we all have our wish lists, from the right signing pen to the right laptop (right, C.R.?). Here are a couple other ideas for those of you who are looking for just the right thing for your writing loved ones.

First, my folks gave me a three-hole punch. Not just any chintzy one. A nice desktop one that can punch up to twenty pages at a time. At first I thought I’d hide it away in my desk drawer and bring it out when I needed it, like my old (chintzy) one. But I soon came to realize that
    was a silly idea.

When I’m writing I print out everything new at the end of each day, and put it in a notebook. I don’t go so far as to take it out to my car, as Casey does, but at least I have a hard copy, in case the computer crashes, which has been (ahem) known to happen. I can’t tell you how nice it is to just stick in the papers, push gently on the punch, and have the papers come out ready to install in the binder. No more squeezing at each hole, to make sure it’s all the way through. No more holes half on the page and half off. And no more having to do only three pages at a time.

It’s a time and hand saver.

The second present they got me was not something I’d thought about, but it sure does come in handy.

What does a writer have more of than anything else (if they use the same printout method as Casey and I)? Drafts. First day drafts. Second day drafts. And on down the line.

Now, someone like me doesn’t want to just toss them in the trash — that wouldn’t be even close to going green, and I wouldn’t be able to sleep for the guilt.

But I certainly don’t want to put entire chapters or even manuscripts in recycling. Wouldn’t that just be great to have someone steal my book and publish it (and of course have a bestseller, right?)? So what do I need to do? Shred it, of course!

So my folks got me a paper shredder. It can rip several sheets at once, and my mistakes and red-penciled drafts are gone.

    Packing material, anyone?

So thanks to my folks for making my working life a little easier. It’s amazing how these little things lessen the stress.

Anyone else have good writer’s gift ideas? I — and those responsible for buying your presents — would love to know.

Currently reading “The Golden Compass,” by Philip Pullman, because I want to see what all the fuss is about.

    1. One Christmas maybe 15 years ago my daughters got me a huge American Heritage dictionary, which I pretty much use every day.

Two years ago (as a gag gift) I gave a couple of my writing friends a mouse pad with my publicity picture printed on it. You can get those done at Kinko’s. Then last Christmas Carol got me one with our family photo on it (Carol, me and the dogs).

Then there’s my subscription to the Ink Cartridge of the Month Club. Of course I had to buy seven different brands of printers, but hey, that’s cheaper than buying the ink.

    2. Oh, you’re so right about the ink. I always try to keep a replacement on hand, because it never fails that I’m printing out the manuscript for an agent and it starts leaving out the middle of the page. Augh! But I have to get them on layaway…

    3. I shred my drafts, too. My husband says I’m paranoid–that no one is going to “steal” my work. Is that why I do it? Or is it because I don’t want someone to see my inferior efforts?

I have a BIG pile to shred right now.

    4. What a perfect post, Judy, because a certain writer (could it be me?)on this blog has a birthday next week. And a certain person who reads this blog and posts now and then (could it be Zorro?), needs suggestions for gifts appropriate for writers. So, what are my ideal gifts for writers? Well, a condo in the Bahamas, for one. Every writer needs that. And a racy sports car. What writer should be without one? Of course, jewelry is always appropriate, as are vacations to exotic locales.

    5. Zzzzzzzzzzzz.
Somebody wake me on 1-22. The day after Casey’s birthday.
      Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

    6. Zman,
I saw a great shredder at Office Max that also makes julienne fries.

    7. I got a short sleeve T-shirt that says “Careful, or you’ll end up in my novel.”
I got a long sleeved T-shirt that says “Careful, or you’ll end up in my novel.”
I got a sweatshirt that says “Careful, or you’ll end up in my novel.”

For my birthday I’m asking for a pair of boxer shorts that say…”Careful, or you’ll end up in my novel.”

Seriously. Got all three from three different people. Now for the shorts!

    8. Don, is this part of “all great minds think alike,” or “I’m in the airport and don’t know what to get Don…oh, how about this?”

    9. I’d really like to know what you think of The Golden Compass when you are done reading it. I read all three books in the triology several years ago because they where VERY popular books in the elementary library where I worked. I read lots of kids books then so that I had some idea what to reccomend to various kids and also so that I wouldn’t be blindsided with unhappy parents.
I won’t say what I thought until you are done, but I’d really really like to know what you think in view of the current fuss.

    10. I’ll let you know, Caryn. I’ve heard from different people what they think, and decided I’d better just form my own opinion since other people’s thoughts are all over the board. I’ll be in touch about it.

    12. I’ll grab them, Don. We want you to have a matching set.
