    Doggone it

Of course, it’s holiday break time, so all the weirdness of the world seems to happen. I had barely started my break; I was on the first few hours of it, when my story began. I was getting a shower last Friday and heard this incredibly loud yelp from the bedroom. Our dog Ellery, a Scottish terrier, had been sleeping on the bed when I went to the bathroom. So I ran out, and the dog had managed to jump off the bed, get his foot caught on something, and had smacked his head hard against the bedframe.

His eye was already swelling shut, and he was bleeding from his nose. So I ran him to the vet. They ran a few tests including a dye test on his eye to make sure there was no damage to the cornea. (I hadn’t seen a black light since, ohhh, 1978 or so!) No damage to the eye, but lots of swelling on the head. While the doctor was telling me that the bleeding shouldn’t be an issue, the dog sneezed and covered me with a blood splatter that CSI would have loved.

He has a concussion (which cost us $150 in vet bills and counting), and we’ve had to keep a concussion watch on him, making sure he doesn’t lapse into unconsciousness, have seizures, etc. We took shifts Friday night. Thankfully the 24 hours is up and he’s fine, but he’s got a huge knot on his head and his eye is still swollen.

Of course, in true dog fashion, he blames me for this (since I took him to the vet) and he having nothing to do with me all week. So it’s been quiet here, as I finish the revisions to Intent to Sell, and work on a few other small writing projects. I hope you had a great Christmas and that all your resolutions are easy for you.

    2. Poor Ellery! Once he’s speaking to you again, give him a hug for me!

    3. So glad to hear he’ll be okay, Jeff. Thank goodness you were home to help!

    4. Poor Ellery!

My dog pulled the same “I’m ignoring you” stunt when I took her to the vet and left her overnight to get fixed. The only creature better at guilting you than a dog?

      A cat.
