    70 weeks a year

The advance reader copy for St. Bart Breakdown just came out, and it was only two weeks ago that the hardback of Stuff To Die For was released. Two books this year. And two next year.

People tell me “When I retire…I’ll write that book.” People say…”When things settle down.” They make wild claims like “When I get all of this behind me…I’ll finally have the time to whatever.” And they ask every writer in the world…”Where do you find the time?”

For all the claims about time…like, ‘finding time’, ‘making time’, ‘killing time’, ‘making time stand still’, most people still don’t understand.

I’m running three businesses, writing two books a year, working on an anthology, and I waste more time than anyone I know. But I make time for what’s important. I get up a little earlier, go to bed a little later, shave half an hour off lunch so I can catch up on some writing, go into work an hour earlier, work during the halftime show during the game…and somehow find two hours a day when I can work on whatever project I want to. Two hours a day. It’s not that hard to find. And I still have more free time than I should.

So when people say “When I finally find the time”, I just want to point out that it’s right there. In front of you. Because two hours a day gives you an extra eighteen forty hour weeks. Eighteen weeks. Imagine what you can do in eighteen weeks. You could write a book, learn to play piano, learn a foreign language, earn a degree, build a home based business, watch a whole lot more television, or whatever you want to do.

Somebody told me a long time ago…you can make excuses or you can get it done. But you can’t do both. You can make those two hours happen, or you can find all the excuses in the world why those two hours don’t exist. It’s up to you. But believe me, they’re available every single day, and they are not that hard to find. And when you finally do find them, you’ll be amazed at what you can accomplish. Imagine, 70 weeks in a year. The possibilities are endless.

    1. Don,
Since you’ve got so much time to waste, how would you like to accompany my wife and in-laws to a brick collectors’ convention this week in beautiful Paris, Illinois — so I can stay home and nap?

    2. so true. I work two part time jobs. Have two kids and a husband and I write. So many people cannot believe it can all get done.
I can write ten pages in an hour. That’s 50 pages a week. That’s 200 pages in a month. A full book in two months.
      It can be done.

    4. My first book got written during the year after my son was born — while he took his naps. Most people like to clean their houses, or take a nap themselves (C.R.), but I know my priorities. : )

    5. Oh man, if I was in jail….the time I could find to get things done.
Oh wait, I am in jail. And 24 hours is my jailor.

    6. PS: Don you are correct. Finding 5 minutes an hour adds up. Its like all those pennies and nickles and dimes I constantly find on the ground. It all adds up.

    7. Don, I have always been an admirer of folks who work fulltime, plus write. My hat is off to you. Of course, like so many women, I started writing when my kids were small. School, softball, doctor appointments, Girl Scouts, sleepovers, camp outs . . .it’s easy to not “find” the time, we have to make the time.

    8. And what Little Blog… would be complete without some songs….about time.
First time song that flashed into my mind…”Time Has Come Today” Chambers Brothers.
Way to old a tune for uhhhh Judy?

    9. Z-
      Come on…you’re better than that.
Time In A Bottle, Time Is On My Side, Time Passages, Time After Time, Every Time You Go Away, Do That To Me One More Time, I Hope You Had The Time Of Your Life…obviously I have much too much time on my hands.

    10. And finally, Zorro, Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is??????

by Don on September 18th, 2007 at 9:16 am

    11. Sorry I got you all excited about that trip to the brick collectors’ gig, Don, but my wife says I can’t weasel out.

    12. Thought we would just go back and forth with time songs.
Now…..I’ve got to do some thinking since you listed a ton of great tunes.
Especially that Chicago song…that was on the CTS lp, yes?
