I wanna box o’ crayons!

‘Tis school supply time, and I’m feeling a wee bit sentimental for the days when it was a big to-do for me to take my little daughters to some version of a shop-n-save for school supplies. Each kiddo would clutch her list and insist on picking out her own items, and dutifully check off each item with the pencils I provided. Sometimes I’d have to lift a little blondie up to reach the glue display. Always there was debate: “I’m ready for the pointy scissors, mama!” “Dear, it still says round-tip, just like last year.” My oldest always wrote “candy” at the bottom of her list, trying to match the 12-point courier the school secretary used to create the list in the first place.

And I always gave in on that point, and bought candy all ’round.

But now… alas… now.

The oldest doesn’t even have a school supply list. I think that has something to do with entering high school. She barely remembers writing “candy” at the bottom of the list. And she would like a cell phone, please (not an unreasonable request, given that she’ll be riding with teen drivers for band activities and on buses to away games), as well as a cute pair o’ clogs, and did I make that appointment so she can get her hair trimmed before school starts? Yeah, we’re well out of the sharp/pointy scissors debate with that one.

The youngest (entering 7th grade) does have a supply list, but she’s edited it. She has the same teachers this year as last, and she said to me, “Mom, this is the school’s generic list. But I have Mr. Friess for math, and instead of one folder, he’ll want us to have…” And so forth, and so on, for each teacher. She’s savvy enough to customize her list. It doesn’t include crayons, although it does include scissors, and there’s no debate that she’s old enough for the pointy ones. And she doesn’t want candy… but locker decorations.

You know what I’m going to do? I’m going to get MYSELF a box of crayons, and the day school starts, after my little (aw, who am I kidding…. one is as tall as me and the other is taller!) girls go off to school, I’m going to color. Outside the lines!

While eating candy!

  1. They are growing up, aren’t they! It’s on our list of things to do today to get school supplies — and I’m back in the first grade and pre-school stage, so I do get to buy the crayons! And the candy, too.

  2. 24 ct. Crayola Crayons were on sale at Walmart for .20 a box. Like I didn’t stock up! For the kids. Really.

We’re still using rounded scissors too, much to the kids’ chagrin.

We color coordinated the pencil boxes, pencil sharpeners, lunch bags and backpacks. Pink for her, blue for him. They got a kick out of it. And I didn’t have to bribe them with candy!

    They got Happy Meals instead.

  3. Sharon, I don’t blame you on the candy. Make it Peanut M&Ms or a Snickers bar and I’ll commiserate with you.

    Kids. Getting older. Sigh.
